East African grocery shopping checklist
Plan your visit for injera, spices, flour, or halal meat with these questions. In the interactive checklist you can add your own items and check off completed steps. Changes are saved on this browser only, not sent to Shaafi Directory. You can also print this resource. These prompts do not verify any store or product.
- Call before traveling: confirm today's opening hours, fresh injera availability, and whether the items you need are in stock.
- For injera or flour: ask which grains are used. A teff label alone does not tell you whether wheat or other grains are mixed in.
- For berbere, mitmita, or other spice blends: ask about ingredients, heat level, and package size before choosing.
- If halal sourcing matters to you: ask the butcher about the supplier and any certification documentation. A directory label is not certification.
- Compare price per pound or ounce, not just the package price; check expiration dates and storage instructions.
- For allergies: check the actual package label and ask about shared preparation equipment. Do not rely on a directory description.
- Plan transport for refrigerated or frozen groceries and bring an insulated bag when needed.
